The current global sustainability context and the war between Russia and Ukraine are driving us towards a future with less availability of energy resources and where energy efficiency will be of paramount importance. Humanitas Research Hospital in Milan is one of the leading hospitals in Italy. It has the standard structure of generalist hospitals, which includes wards, operating theatres, outpatient facilities, radiology, sterilisation units, pathology labs, etc. Energy bills have become, like for other hospitals, a pressing concern. The Deputy Chief Medical Officer at Humanitas Research Hospital has called you as she needs your help with the following problem. She asks you to explore a sustainable approach to decrease energy consumption in hospital care. She recommends that you should explore ideas that will affect neither the number, nor the types of patients attending the hospital. You may want to consider the use of new sources of energy (solar panels), energy efficiency, and the management of the delivery of care. She asks you to ground your suggestions in the principles of health economics, sustainability and data analytics.
Business Report for Humanitas Hospital to explore a sustainable approach to decrease energy consumption in hospital care.
You are asked to advise a senior manager from a healthcare organisation. You should set out your recommendations to support the sustainability efforts of this organisation. Elements of review and feedback to monitor the implementation and impact of your recommendations should also be included. You will discuss your work in a business report. Your intended audience is the senior management team of the organisation you are advising.
This business report will require you to:
• Conduct research: find and use resources to address the requirements of the assignment. Consider the material you can access using your UCL library account. Feel free to use non-academic sources as long as they meet the criteria of the CARS checklist.
• Write the business report: the maximum number of words is 5,000. Remember to include relevant exhibits that may help you illustrate and support your arguments and make sure to show your ability to use software tools such as Tableau and SPSS.
Requirements of the assignment
Please consider all the requirements below for your business report. Ensure you use the material you have learnt during the health economics, data analytics and sustainability weeks to illustrate your points:
• Identify the opportunities for sustainability
Analyse and evaluate these opportunities qualitatively and quantitatively and explain why they exist. Remember to consider the health economics perspective to ground the opportunities in a clear context.
• Recommend an approach to improve sustainability
Discuss your recommendations to exploit these opportunities for sustainability. Explain why your recommendations will work and identify potential obstacles.
• Monitor the implementation and assess the impact of your recommendations Explain how you would monitor the implementation and impact of your recommendations.

Do we need to use SPSS or Tableau?
We very strongly advise you to use either software to analyse data and produce outputs. This is a tangible learning outcome that you can quantify. It is also a good exercise to ‘think differently’, like a data analyst in this case. Feel free to go beyond the resources available in the exercise we have done or to contact me if you are stuck.
ii) Publicy available data might have already been used to produce the same output.
You should reference each source, whether it is data or ideas. You will not be marked down for this. It doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t produce your own plots and results, as the existing version might not be optimal for the message you want convey/part you want to emphasise.
iii) Using NPV.
NPV is a simple and effective way to provide a solid financial analysis of your initiative. In case you have missed block 2, I attach a slide (slide 6 of the slidedeck) and an Excel sheet that shows how to compute NPV (the sheet is ‘NPV’). Note that I used Excel, not SPSS, as SPSS is primarily built for data and statistical analysis, not to perform financial calculations.
