Can serial dependence studies provide new insight into perceptual abilities and how perceptual processes differ in particular groups?

THE ESSAY QUESTION: Can serial dependence studies provide new insight into perceptual abilities
and how perceptual processes differ in particular groups?
You should take a position in relation to that question in your essay.

Use following context to address the question:
1. Describe serial dependence and Alexi’s serial dependence based approach to studying body size
judgment errors. In evaluating this approach, your essay should compare this method and findings
to other perception based research on the topic. Your answer should also include a separate
discussion of the utility of this approach for understanding differences in body size perception that
are associated with eating disorder symptoms.
These are the links to Alexi’s serial dependence study you need to refer to all 3 of them. I can aalso provide PDF copies if you cant access the full texts.

We were also provided with this additional information to help guide our answer to the question
Description of serial dependence approach to topic:
• Do you understand serial dependence as a general perceptual process?
• Can you describe the studies of the relevant author (Alexi)?
Comparison of serial dependence approach to other perceptual methods within topic:
• Have you found several alternative perceptual methods used to investigate the relevant area
of psychology?
• Do you understand how the methods and findings compare?
• Do you know the relative strengths and weaknesses of these approaches?
Differentiation between clinical groups:
• Can you describe the clinical relevance of the author’s studies?
• Have you found a possible explanation for the reported variation in this perceptual process
in those with elevated symptoms?
• Have you found 1 or more alternative approaches to studying perceptual differences in this
clinical area (i.e. eating disorders
I can also provide the marking key if that would be helpful.
In regards to writing the essay I prefer essays that do not use a first person writing style so please dont use “i will be argueing…” etc.
In terms of content I am quite flexible so whatever you think works best but I was thinking of doing a body paragraph explaining what serial dependence was as a general perceptual process bbefore going into the rest of the  arguement. For my thesis I was thinking of argueing something about serial dependence offering some inghts but that these arent drastically different to those offered by other perceptual studies i.e., adaptation after effect studies also show the influence of past visual information on current perception etc. When comparing the strengths and weakness of the approaches to studying body size they can relate to the either serial dependence as a general concept or specifically to the methodology of Alexis study. I was going to refer to the fact its not ecologically valid given that its 2D images which are more ambigious and thus it may be that they are more likely to evoke serial dependence than real world observations (serial dependence magnitude is influenced by ambiguity). I am ok with whatever other perceptual studes you want to compare against but to help you I was considering studies involving regression to the mean and visual adaptation such as:
– Looking at the fugures: visual adaptation as a mechanism for body size and shape misperception by Kevin Brooks

– Body size over-estimation in women with anorexia nervosa is not qualitatively different from female controls https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23102545/
