Case Response #2
The Case of the New Student Assistance Coordinator (SAC)
You have just begun your employment at a local high school as a SAC. This is your first position since earning your Master’s degree in counseling. There are two school counselors at the school, both of them pre-tenured. You are supervised by the director of guidance, who has little time to spend with the counselors.
On your third day on the job, you have a 17 year old junior of Italian descent who is pregnant and has been thrown out of the house by her parents. She is having trouble keeping up in school and her grades are slipping. She is living with a friend right now, but knows that she cannot stay there long. Her boyfriend has broken up with her and she is feeling very sad and almost desperate. She has a part time job after school but only receives minimum wages. She has one more year to go in high school and would like to finish. She doesn’t know what she is going to do. She is already four months pregnant. She is confused about the baby; she is frightened because she feels alone and helpless.
You know that you need to refer this student out for some services but you also think that you can help her with others. At the next counselors meeting you bring this up and find that the other two counselors have been very frustrated in their efforts to make appropriate referrals. They too say that they would like to work with some of the students and refer them out for only services that they can’t handle in the school setting. They also express frustration because of mixed messages that they have been getting from the administration. On one hand, they are told not to make referrals unless absolutely necessary and with the approval of the school psychologist. On the other hand, they are being loaded down with administrative duties that limit their abilities to see students on a one to one basis for counseling purposes. In addition, they advise you that the school tends to put students on home instruction once their pregnancies become obvious. You are concerned about this.
Based on your knowledge of ethics laws and policies, please respond to the following
1. How would you decided what services you need to refer the client out for and what services you can handle?
2. What specific services would you refer this client out for?
3. What issues would you tackle with her in the school setting?
4. What laws, codes and policies apply to this case?
Make sure that you elaborate on your answers. Be specific, especially when talking about services and referrals.
