This is not a Research Paper
I uploaded the instruction as a pdf file.
Also, I uploaded the painting and poetry.
*No outside sources*
Your paper should be 5-6 pages (double-spaced, approximately 250-300 words per page). Do not
try to describe the full paintings (especially the long handscrolls). Rather, choose carefully the
scenes in your first painting (a or b), describe what you see and think about what the painter is
trying to express (think: Xiang Shengmo’s poems) through the landscape and the journey he is
presenting. Think about the importance of naming in the Chinese garden, and how names and
poetry enhance a particular spatial frame. Extend this idea to what you see in the painting. For
your second painting (c or d), you should do the same, but you should also be thinking about
how Gong’s painting creates a different mood from the handscroll by your first artist. This has
also largely to do with the fact that Gong Xian was painting at a different time: not at the end of
the Ming, but at the beginning of the Qing, when the country was ruled by the foreign Manchus
and China was experiencing war-related upheavals and trauma.
Again, this is not a research paper and you should not be adding information from other sources to
supplement your paper. The only resources you are encouraged to think about and/or utilize are
the readings on gardens and the poems by Xiang Shengmo on reclusion.
