Your task is to write a three-to-four-page comparative film review essay. The review will analyze the two Holocaust films (Shop on Main Street and Angry Harvest). The goal of the essay is to identify common historical themes or events in the two films. Your essay should only briefly summarize the plots (no more than one paragraph in total). For the heart of the essay, first, you should identify a key historical theme or topic that appears in both films (choose one or two). This does not mean you must discuss the entire film, but rather focus on certain elements of each film relevant to your discussion. Second, address how each film deals with the theme and compare both approaches. In your comparison, consider such questions as: What does each film communicate about the theme? How does it execute its vision? What are the similarities or differences between these approaches? In your estimation, is one film more successful than the other in its execution (note: not your opinion, but rather your analysis based on evidence from the films)? Why or why not? You do not need to answer all of these questions; rather, they are meant to be guiding questions as you formulate your essay. In your discussion, try to incorporate film theory concepts from the guides found on the syllabus and course website.
