The National Outbreak Reporting System (NORS) is a web-based platform maintained by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is used by local, state, and territorial health departments in the United States to report all waterborne and foodborne disease outbreaks and enteric disease outbreaks transmitted by contact with environmental* sources, infected persons or animals, or unknown modes of transmission to CDC.
Comparing Foodborne Disease Outbreaks using the CDC National Outbreak Reporting System
Based on the assignment requirements, respond to this followng classmate post
The public can use the NORS Dashboard (see link below) to search and access data from reports on these outbreaks by various attributes that include
– type of outbreak (foodborne, waterborne, animal contact, environmental*, person-to-person, indeterminate),
– type of outcome (illnesses, hospitalizations, deaths),
– timeframe/year,
– State,
– etiology (for a range of biological and chemical stressors),
– setting, and
– major exposure medium/type (i.e. food/ingredient and water exposure/type).
In order to become familiar with NORS, please select three (or more) of the above attributes and retrieve and compare information available in NORS for your selection (as an example, you can compare foodborne disease outbreaks that resulted in hospitalizations for two States for a given year or over a range of years, etc.). Please summarize your selection, your findings, as well as any comments, criticism and suggestions you may have regarding the usability of the NORS dashboard, in 500 words or less.
* Note: In the context of NORS, CDC defines “environmental contamination outbreaks” as all outbreaks of enteric illness spread through contact with “other” environmental sources, such as dirty linens or surfaces that people touch in bathrooms; of course all outbreaks result from exposure to some external/environmental stressor, biological or chemical, either present in an environmental medium (water or food) or carried by another organism (human or animal).* Note: In the context of NORS, CDC defines “environmental contamination outbreaks” as all outbreaks of enteric illness spread through contact with “other” environmental sources, such as dirty linens or surfaces that people touch in bathrooms; of course all outbreaks result from exposure to some external/environmental stressor, biological or chemical, either present in an environmental medium (water or food) or carried by another organism (human or animal).
