Prompt: Complete a personal statement (1000 words)
In your personal statement, address:
o Why do you want to pursue a master’s degree in nursing at Elmhurst University?
o How will this program further your academic and professional goals?
Below is a little bit about myself you need to know;
~ I was born and raised in Ghana. I came to the United States when I was 18 with the hope of pursuing a career in medicine one day and having a better future. Being the first child, a mom to a sweet little girl, and a first generation college student has always inspired me to do more. I started my college journey at a community college and worked my way up to a four year college where I got my BS in Psychology. As the first child, I’ve always had a lot of responsibilities on my shoulders from taking care of my younger siblings, helping them with their school work and working to help my parents pay bills. I sometimes have to take my immigrant parents who aren’t fluent in English to their appointments to make sure they understand everything that is being said. With all these distractions I never made it an excuse not to pursue higher education. I had my baby during my senior year of college and after graduating I came back to Harper college to finish taking my prereqs for nursing school.
~ What really inspired and influenced me to go for a career in healthcare was that, I remember growing up as a child in Ghana, my grandmother died of breast cancer. What hurts the most about this situation is that nobody ever took it very seriously and the doctors kept on prescribing medication for her instead of doing a test to find out what was wrong with her. Two weeks after she passed away a biopsy came out that she had stage 4 cancer, this breaks my heart anytime i remember.
Another thing that keeps me going harder is to be a good role model and example for my daughter, younger siblings and to be able to provide a better living conditions for my olds parents in the future.
I would also like to go back to my home country one day to give back by building a hospital and establishing a nonprofit organization with the aim of providing a free, quality and better healthcare system for people living in rural areas, elderly, women and children.
Also please include why Elmhurst would be a good fit ( my reason is because its affordable compared to other programs, also as a mom of a 15 months old baby this online opportunity would be an excellent option for me) I get to do school work and also take good care of my daughter. Another reason for pursing this Masters in Nursing is that, I want to be a nurse Practioner one day after working as a nurse for a while. My long term career goal is to be a Nurse Pactioner. So this program would be a good fit for that since it prepares me for that leadership role for the future. You can add more reasons to it.
P.S – let me know if you need to my resume for reference to. I will attach my Mentor’s personal statement for a refrence and some ideas. please let me know if you need anything else. ( BUT she is a Physician Assistant not a Nurse), so somethings might be different but very similar “almost the same”. I am applying for the Master’s Entry in Nursing Practice program at Elmhurst University. You can go to their website and do a little research about the school and the program.
