Students will conduct a brief participant observation or ethnographic study wherein they study and/or participate in a particular group event or social organization. Examples of events include: visiting a religious group (other than the one the student usually attends), hanging out at a
coffee shop, attending a sporting event, a park play date, or any volunteer organization.
Students can also choose to participate in a virtual event (e.g. zoom meeting, online church,
online small groups, etc.) if preferred. Students must observe the social environment for no less than one hour and write down detailed observations including, but not limited to: the
demographics of the individuals or groups in the setting, conversations that can be overheard,
gestures and body language of those in the setting, patterns of interaction between individuals/groups. Students will then analyze their notes from a sociological perspective and identify,
define, and apply at least 5 sociological concepts from chapters 1-2 (Ferris and Stein, 2022) at work as well as note anything that may have been surprising or new.
Paper should be 2-3 pages of text (not including a cover page and reference(s) page) and
formatted in APA. Please remember proper in-text citations.
