Consider this quote from noted American author James Baldwin: “An identity would seem to be arrived at by the way in which the person faces and uses his experiences.”
Prompt :
By carefully analyzing at least two readings from this unit, craft an argument that supports Baldwin’s premise.
Make sure it has a title and and reference page that doesn’t count as the 4th page it would be the 5th.
5 paragraphs
intro make sure it has a thesis explaining what the paper it will be about
Write a thoughtful thesis that states your argument.
For the 3 body paragraphs maybe the first body paragraph talk about how the author experience identity issues, then categorize what his experience would be under.
The second body paragraph talk about the ather author and how he faced identity then categorized under what shaped his identity for , example racial discrimination, childhood, personal experience etc..
3 body paragraph compare the two authors and how identity shaped both of their lives and ways each author faced identity.
Conclusion
I will also post a picture of my google slides which basically has the quotes and what it would be categorized under for the first story, all u have to do is just add on to the argument.
The second story might take some research
•Each body paragraph must build a single point by incorporating two sources (with textual support and analysis).
•Support your overall argument and each point with analysis and textual evidence.
•Include five total paragraphs – an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
Before Writing… Investigate with Questions
How do the authors arrive at their respective identities?
•How can you characterize the authors’ identities?
•To what categories can you assign these identity characteristics?
–Answers to these questions will be your concepts.
•What experiences helped to craft their identities?
•How do these experiences from each reading align with the categories of identity characteristics?
– Answers to these questions will be your details.
What is Identity?
Identity is the qualities, beliefs, personality, looks and/or expressions that make a person
–Self-identity is part of psychology… who you are, how you see yourself
–Collective identity is part of sociology… how you identify and how others see you as part of particular groups (i.e., nation, social class, race, culture/sub-culture, ethnicity, gender, employment)
–Attributes of identity can be defined as positive (i.e., helpful or affirming) or negative (i.e., harmful or destructive)
–Identity is fluid; it is not fixed; many factors contribute to forming a person’s identity; these factors can be either common or unique
Consider all of this information when thinking
of Baldwin’s quote and preparing your argument.
