You will then write a 3 pages summary the article it entirely it in your own words, in MLA format. No citations should be used, since this will be your summary, entirely in your own words. Just make sure you name the title of the article you are summarizing the author at the beginning (Example: John Smith’s article, “The Nuances of Communication Among Couples…”).
1. The chosen article must be at least five full pages-long, from a reliable publication.
2. Your summary will consist of 3 double-spaced pages (at least two full pages and a partial third page) in correct MLA format (1” margins all-around, with no extra spacing or skipped lines).
3. Please pay attention to your paragraph structure (no rambling paragraphs)
4. The assignment must be completed and uploaded only in WORD format.
5. Use only 12-point Times New Roman fonts (do not use the default font in Word).
6. Please also upload the original article, as a separate file in the original library format (could be PDF).
Article summarizing tips
1. Read the article one time all the way through.
A. Get a general sense of what the article is about, and how the pieces of the article fit together.
B. If you read a passage that you don’t quite understand, re-read it 2-3 times; if you still do not understand the passage, mark it with a pen or pencil for later analysis and move on.
C. If there are any technical terms you are not familiar with, make sure you look up the definition. Never parrot things you do not understand, because this is about demonstrating your comprehension of the article in your own words.
2. Read the article again and again until you can answer the following questions in your own words:
A. What is the thesis (or central claim, or main point, or main argument)? Clues for the thesis can typically found in the article’s introduction.
B. Can you summarize the article’s main points in your own words? What are the arguments offered by the author?
3. Include your critique/evaluation in your next-to-final paragraph (the final one should only be a short conclusion) in terms of how the article connects with your own experiences or real-life situations you know about.
