To measure a psychological construct, we typically use scales that have
been found to assess the presence and/or degree of a construct.
You are presented with a selection of approved psychological constructs,
and where applicable the corresponding scales that measure these constructs.
You are tasked with selecting at least
two constructs [at least one should utilize a scale], generating a testable
hypothesis about the relationship/interaction of these constructs, collecting
data using the provided scales and compose a brief report of your methods and
findings.
The Final Data Project should follow the following guidelines:
Use this template to
complete your final paper.
1) Begin with an introduction
– a presentation of background empirical research on your constructs. You are
provided with at least one journal article on the topic(s), you must find at least 3 additional empirical sources.
a) This should be composed
into a literature review format [http://writingcenter.unc.edu/handouts/literature-reviews/] and culminate in a testable hypothesis
statement
b) Introduction should be at
least 2 pages
2) A Methods section with
a) a description of all
constructs [your project should include at
least two well defined constructs], including the operational definitions
and discussion of the scales/tests utilized in the measurement of these
constructs.
i)
Where applicable, validity and reliability statistics
should be reported for the instruments
b) A description of the
procedures used to collect these data, including the demographics of the sample
used [age, gender], and procedures [how the instruments were administered
c) Methods should be at
least 1 page
3) A results section
including
a) Tables and graphs
illustrating the results.
b) At least one of the following statistical tests must be run.
Related test statistics, P values, and effect sizes must be reported. (at
least 1 page)
i)
An independent sample t test
ii)
A correlation coefficient
iii)
An analysis of variance
iv)
A chi square [test of independence]
4) A reflection composed in a
discussion section format, of the results and how they relate to background
research, and what implications there might be for future studies. In this
section, you should demonstrate course concepts related to critical thinking
and a clear understanding of the scientific method (at least 1 page).
5) Your total project should
be at least 5-7 pages [not including appendices for tables/graphs, or reference
page].
6) The final submitted paper
should be formatted as an APA style paper: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/general_format.html
