Assessment 2 – Essay (30%, 1350 words) Due Week 9, Monday 8 May, 9 PM
Assessment aim
To develop deeper understanding of how communication processes and media technologies shape human behaviour.
Assessment task
For this assessment, students will write an academic essay that demonstrates their analytical understanding of communication and media concepts from weeks 6-8, and how they apply to different domains of society e.g. economy, environment, production industries, consumerism, mass media, culture.
ESSAY TOPIC:
Demonstrate the benefits and consequences of globalisation in relation to a specific issue, product or industry (e.g. tourism, fashion, telecommunications) (week 7 topic)
Submissions need to demonstrate understanding of relevant theoretical concepts by applying your answer to real-world examples e.g. recent news events, global issues, industries, perceptions of art and entertainment, developments in media and technology.
Assessment format and submission
This is an academic essay that requires an introduction, a main body (argument) and a conclusion. Please do not use headings but instead use paragraph breaks appropriately.

Marking criteria
– Content and application: Demonstrates knowledge of relevant key theoretical concepts and how they apply to a chosen domain (35%)
– Argument and analysis: Position and argument is well-informed, cohesive and consistent throughout; demonstrates depth of analysis and critical thinking (15%)
– Structure and presentation: Includes an introduction, main body section and conclusion; appropriate use of paragraph breaks and sentence spacing (10%)
– Research: Conducts a range of relevant, credible research to support understanding of the topic from course readings and independent sources (15%)
– Referencing: Uses paraphrasing and in-text referencing with page numbers to make credible claims, referencing is correctly formatted using the UniSA Harvard or APA 7 Referencing System (15%)
– Written expression: Uses formal, objective and concise language with correct grammar, spelling and punctuation (10%)
