Mental illness is diagnosed by confirming the presence or absence of symptoms, which can be positive or negative compared to normal behavior. Mental disorders may be due to genetic factors, injuries, or brain diseases. Psychosocial factors such as psychological, family, and social conditions can also contribute to psychopathology. The stress-vulnerability model is a potential explanation for many mental illnesses, which suggests a combination of inherited susceptibility and environmental or social stressors.
