1. DESCRIBE: Describe the major ethical differences between Warren’s view of Moral Status (drawing from her 2 articles) and Lee & George’s view of Moral Status. (1-2 pages) In addition to referencing these 3 articles, draw from at least 2 other references from our course material. Do not use quotes, but paraphrase the material you draw from.
2. COMPARE: Analyze how the two different views would be applied to the following medical procedures (2-3 pages). In other words, describe how Warren and Lee/George’s views of Moral Status and Personhood would either support or oppose each of the particular medical activities listed below. You may include a simple chart (not more than 1/3 of a page) to succinctly show your analysis, but your accompanying text should describe how you reached your conclusions.
– Elective abortion of a pre-viable fetus (<22 weeks)
– Elective surgical abortion of a post-viable, healthy fetus (>22+ weeks)
– Elective surgical abortion of a post-viable, Downs Syndrome fetus (>22+ weeks)
– Testing new drugs on monkeys
– Testing new drugs on a 20 day old human embryo in the lab
– Freezing ‘spare’ 5 day old human embryos for possible IVF use at a later time
– Administering drugs to cause death to a 25 year old comatose man, who sustained serious head and internal injuries in a bicycle accident, in a country where legal.
– Administering drugs to cause death of an otherwise healthy 80 year woman with advanced Alzheimer’s Disease, in a country where legal
2. YOUR REFLECTION: Describe some observations that occurred to you as you were working through the procedures in #2 above. Did your views of Moral Status shift? Stay the same? Why do you think they did or did not. Add any personal thoughts you have. (1 page)
