In this section of the course we have learned about the Rationalist and Empiricist approach to knowledge. Interestingly, both approaches fall into the trap of the “egocentric predicament.” In this paper, I want you to describe what the “egocentric predicament” is and detail how both approaches lead to this problem. Then I want you to discuss if you think Immanuel Kant’s work is able to free people from falling into this problem (Kant believed that he helped to fix this problem and to allow us to trust our knowledge again), make sure to describe why or why not.
Make sure to read the requirements in the syllabus regarding the paper – the length is between 750-1000 words (about 3-5 pages)
Writing Assignment (Essays): You are required to write a brief (750 – 1000 words – about 3-5 pages) essay. The essay instructions will be located at the end of the syllabus as well as in the instructions box located in the Assignment Page on Canvas. I utilize a four category Rubric for grading your paper. These categories are Content, Organization, Grammar, and Form.
Content: In this area I am looking for an accurate understanding of the concepts, ideas, and themes I have asked you to write about. I am looking for you to demonstrate your understanding through description and integration of the key elements. The analysis, synthesis, and details you provide will indicate your level of understanding. I am also looking for a well-organized paper; the paper should flow between key points with good transitions and should be clear and understandable. (up to 75 Points).
Grammar: In this area I will examine the clarity of word usage and sentence structure. Punctuation, Capitalization, Spelling, and Sentence Construction are the main areas under this topic. (up to 20 Points)
Form: In this area I am looking at the overall presentation of the writing assignment. Are the margins 1”, is the paper left justified, are the citations clear and consistent, is there a bibliography, etc. (up to 5 Points)
Papers must be original (Original means that the work must originate from your own thinking about the topics; papers that merely paraphrase or borrow heavily from websites or books will be marked down severely and may be treated as plagiarism). You will be able to upload your documents to the assignment links in Canvas. I will only accept assignments from the website – do not send me documents as an email attachment. Essays are due on the date indicated in the syllabus; after midnight, each assignment will be considered late. Each day will cost a 5 point deduction from the grade. The writing assignments will help students to meet SLO 1-5, by providing an opportunity to offer critical comments, use terminology and concepts, present a logical and persuasive set of arguments, reflect on implications for contemporary issues and concerns, and to force students to adopt a position or posture toward the wider world.
