Discuss how this year’s Yoto Carnegie Medal winner October, October by Katya Balen relates to the history and tradition of children’s literature.

Your discussion should refer to Block 6 and at least one of its associated set books, and to at least one other block and set book from the module. Word Count 3000

Guidance notes

Your assignment should include:

  • a clear description of the framework that you intend to use to explore the EMA question that you have chosen, and your rationale for this
  • the reasons for your choice of set text(s), and an indication of what these choices bring to your answer
  • an awareness (critical evaluation) of the strengths and limitations of the theoretical material from EA300 Block 6 and at least another block that you have chosen to draw on. You are not required to agree with the points made in the material.
  • Referencing Guide-  All references come in two parts:
    • an in-text citation providing minimum information to identify the publication, author, date and possibly page/location reference

    • full details in the References list at the end of your work.

The References list at the end of your work should include all (and only) the works that you have mentioned in your assignment, in alphabetical order by author.

    Avoid Plagarism
When setting out your own ideas or arguments, it is particularly important that you do not reproduce extracts from the module (or from other sources) with little or no change, as this does not demonstrate your understanding of the ideas and gives the impression that you are trying to pass off someone else’s ideas as your own. This could constitute plagiarism.

  • You should take particular care to check whether online sources are appropriate and reliable enough for a university assignment. Study notes intended for school students, or Wikipedia articles, for instance, may or may not provide accurate or relevant information, and their use may detract from, rather than improve, the quality of your work.

In the introduction to your EMA, please indicate clearly which books and module blocks you will be referring to.

Preparing your EMA

  • Be sure to invest time in planning your EMA. Take time to read the question.
  • It will also help to refresh your awareness of the assessment criteria for the module and reread the Marking grid which is used when marking your work.
  • You can select from and draw on the EA300 module material (set texts, Study Guide, Readers and AV materials) that you find most engaging and relevant to the option you choose.
  • You will need to be selective in choosing from all this information and evidence but are expected to draw on material from Block 6, one or more of its associated set texts, and at least another block and one set text from the module.
  • You should demonstrate that you can sift material and present points in the form of a coherent, in-depth argument, drawing on a range of sources and positions represented across the module.
  • You will be assessed in part on your ability to evaluate the strengths and limitations of the materials you use and how clearly you express your critical engagement with the associated issues.
  • You may draw on additional external sources provided they are relevant, and you reference them appropriately . However, it is not essential to use them, and priority should be given to the EA300 material.
  • In the EMA, you may write about the set texts that you have focused on in your TMAs, but you must not reuse material, such as sections of previous assignments, whether in the original or in an edited form.

Structuring your EMA

There are no specific requirements for the structure of this assignment. The EMA must have a clear and logical structure, but you may organise it in any way that you feel is appropriate. You will nevertheless need to ensure a balance between examples and discussion, without either one of these predominating. Do not waste your word count on unnecessary plot summaries. Similarly, you don’t need to include long summaries of any articles or essays you refer to, or very lengthy quotations from them. You may include visual images if they are relevant. It is important to keep to the recommended word length 3000.
