Pick two of the following questions and write a response in paragraph form. Each of the 2 responses needs to be at least 400 words, in your own words, with citations. Up to 25% of each response can consist of cited quotes or cited paraphrases.
Basic college writing rules apply. Your responses do not need to include an introduction or concluding paragraph.
Make sure that you cite any quotes or paraphrases that you use. Remember if 2 consecutive sentences are paraphrased, each one needs a separate citation.
The Bibliography/Works Cited page does not count towards the minimum number of words for your Midterm Essays.
Questions:
1. Discuss the Civil Rights Movement or the Chicano Movement.
Pick a Movement for Civil Rights from the 2 listed above and discuss it. Include the answers to the following questions: What was the Movement? What were some of the reasons for the Movement i.e. what factors contributed to the need for action? What were the participants attempting to achieve? List and discuss 3 significant events that took place during the Movement or that had a significant impact upon it. For each event explain- when the event took place, who was involved and how, as well as what happened. Explain the impact of the individual events that you chose, and of the Movement as a whole. Was the Movement in question successful? If so to what degree?
2. Describe and discuss the Spanish American War and its impact. As part of your Paper include answers to the following questions: How/Why did the War break out? What was America’s role in the War? List and explain 2 factors that contributed to America’s entry into the Spanish American War. What was the outcome of the peace treaty? What was its significance i.e. what effect did the outcome of the peace treaty have on the U.S. and the territories/countries involved? Briefly discuss the subsequent relationship between the U.S. and Cuba, and the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and, or the Philippines, and, or, Guam (You can but do not have to discuss all 4 relationships, you can focus on one or two). What impact did this relationship have on immigration or migration from the country (in the case of Cuba, or post-independence Philippines) or territory/territories (in the cases of Puerto Rico, Guam and, or the Philippines prior to 1946) to the U.S. mainland?
