COLLAPSE
This week in my practice learning site I’ve observed that daily interactions and practice ARE truly based on our social work standards and values from the NASW Code of Ethics. As a first timer in this field, I was so nervous to meet the professional practitioners at the office, but so quickly during introductions I felt welcomed and comforted that I will find good support in this environment.
I am working at KN Therapy, a local private practice. The practice offers services to improve the wellbeing of client mental health, for families, couples, youths and children. It is a small office but my supervisor also partners with a community-based organization, Bien Estar, to extend services to underserved communities, such as members of the LGBTQ and LatinX communities.
I was invited to join group supervision meetings with the team to observe as clinicians went through case presentations. It was here where I listened to some of the challenges that some of the therapists were facing with clients. Through some of the difficult moments, the supervision meeting served as a support to the professional. The peer group collaborated with perspectives to help each other. I noted when the clinicians spoke about clients it was always in an ethically respectful manner, where the focus was trying to find solutions or effective approach to assist the client. It was client centered.
My internship certainly demonstrated a commitment to the client and maintained their respectful work relationship by setting boundaries that will sustain a productive program to help reach goals, which was consistent with the NASW Code of Ethics (2017).
I can already see that my course readings, including the MSW Practice Education Manual will help me reinforce my experience within KN Therapy. I will be able to put in practice the social work profession core competencies in my internship on a daily, as I can use the manual as a reference (Christenson et al., n.d.). I can already identify the consistent use of competency 1. Demonstrate Ethical and Professional Behavior (Christenson et al., n.d.).

COLLAPSE
Practice Education and Practicum Site
Hi everyone!
I am currently doing my practicum at my place of employment, Youth Villages. Youth Villages has two different program which include Intercept and Lifeset. Intercept specialist serves birth until 17, whereas Lifeset specialist serve young adults 18 to 22. For intercept, we receive referrals from DCYF due to either caregiver challenges, youth challenges or often times both. We determine treatment based off of the referral behaviors. The goal is to support youth and families that are in high-risk situations to divert the risk or removal or support the reunification process. Intercept is a high intensity services, meaning specialist go out to the home 3x a week. For Lifeset, we also receive a referral from DCYF (our funder) for a young adults based off of their referral issues. The goal for our young adults is to work on them with their independent living skills which include: independent housing, education, employment etc. Lifeset specialist meet with young adults 2x a week.
I am currently a supervisor of an Intercept team. I previously was an Intercept specialist for 2 years prior to my new position. With that being said, I was no as familiar with Lifeset services. For my practicum I am diving into learning the ropes of the Lifeset program. I recently was given a Lifeset case of a young adult that needs support with independent living skills as well continued challenges with suicidal iideation, self-harm, and substance use. With that being said, during my two sessions with this young adult, I prioritized a harm reduction safety plan for suicidal ideation, self-harm and substance use.
Based on the MSW Practice Education Manual, I was able to increase my knowledge on ethics, social work theories in order to continue to develop my professional competences. In addition, I was able to review a culmination of social work education as well as values and skills that will be imperative throughout my practicum. This will help me be successful in my journey through my practicum and although I am doing my practicum in my place of work, I have diving into a department that is foreign to me. This will support me in being successful while also ensure that self-care and burnout do not take over. In order to do so, I will ensure utilize my supports from my supervisor and classmates (Barlow, 2007).
