I wanted to provide a better sense of the political , economic, and military realities facing the world after the second world war. In particular the United States surived the war as a formidable super power. It’s formally against Hitler and the Nazis, the Soviet Union represented another competetive super power in Eastern Europe. This competetion for world influence and supremacy created the Cold War, which lasted nearly 45 years.
This week’s discussion from chapter one focuses on the changes within American society and politics. The United States pressure of it’s new role in the world alongside the increasing tensions with the Soviet Union influenced it’s domestic and foreign policies.
Do you think McCarthyism was the correct approach to discovering Communist in the United States? Was it the right method to root out Soviet infiltrators in America? What would you have suggested?
