Please read carefully. For this assignment, the goal is for you to analyze the article as any non-clinical person without sources of support would. As such, the analysis should be your individual thoughts, ideas, and summaries pertaining to the article. Therefore, there should be no citations, quotes, or paraphrases as you should not need to consult outside sources for your summative and substantive content.
Per the instructions, “NO outside sources are necessary or should be used for the paper…Your report should be your OWN thoughts and ideas about what the article is communicating.”
Each student will write
an analysis of a non-professionally based source of
information on health care in the United States.
Sources can range from
a full-length article in a magazine, printed newspaper, or electronic
versions of newspapers, to freely accessible blog sites and media outlets
found on the internet.
Whatever the source
being critiqued, it must be aimed at the average consumer and NOT the
professional RN or health care provider. Think
of items that the average patient or patient’s family member would likely
present to you and ask for your opinion about. The article must also be
no older than 90 days.
·
The consumer press
includes magazines (Time, Newsweek, Good
Housekeeping – anything the lay public may read) and local or national
newspapers. The full-length web version of a magazine or newspaper
article can be used. Save the article right away since free access to
such articles may stop a few days after they appear.
·
The article must be
accessible to the instructor at the time of grading. So save the web page and include it as an
attachment in the assignment submission. Otherwise, you may be docked
points for an inactive URL submission.
·
The publication date of
the source must be within the last 90 days.
Format
·
Use 7th edition APA
format for the article reference, at the beginning of the report. You do not need to use citations in the paper or other
references, since all Summary and Analysis content is drawn from the
article. NO outside sources are necessary or should be used for the
paper.
·
Your report should be
your OWN thoughts and ideas about what the article is communicating.
·
Include the actual
(working) URL! If this is not accessible by the
instructor a deduction in grade may be applied.
·
The paper will consist
of two portions: a Summary and an Analysis. Clearly indicate these sections
with APA Headings.
o
The Summary of the article should be no more than 1-2 paragraphs.
This should tell the reader what the article was about and the major
points that were made in it. Your opinions do not belong in this
section.
o
The Analysis of
the article should be no more than 3-4 paragraphs. Here is where you provide
your Analysis of the issue or event described in the article. Focus on
the relationship to the Nursing Profession, the Healthcare System or the health
of individuals, families or communities. The Analysis should demonstrate
that you have considered the source of the publication (magazine, website,
etc.), that you evaluated what was presented, and that you
have made a decision as to the reliability of the information presented.
·
Depending on the topic
of the article, address any relationship (in 1-2 paragraphs) to any
current or pending Legislation, the relationship to Healthcare Institutions,
Barriers or Facilitators to access to care, and Ethical, Cultural or Diversity
issues in health care.
Please note the following
·
Neither the Analysis nor
the Summary may contain ANY direct quotes from the original article.
·
Include a copy of the
article or URL in the text of the posting or as an attached, saved web site.
