Specific information:
¨ seeking to explore specific disease processes that can produce epi/pandemic disease – e.g. infectious diseases, ‘behavioural’ diseases (e.g. harmful use of alcohol & other drugs of abuse, obesity);
¨ examining specific epi/pandemic events in detail – effects on individual patient and wider effects (see below);
¨ also looking to examine societal, economic, medical (e.g. treatment, public health and health policy) consequences – both with regard to specific epi/pandemics and throughout history;
¨ what can be learnt and put in place to minimize the risk of further epi/pandemics – medically, politically, societally?
Suggested structure: ~500-750 words for general introduction to/overview of subject, incl background and any relevant historical material;
~2500-3000 words for main section – examining two specific epi/pandemics in detail (These should be of different causations – e.g. viral, bacterial, fungal, protozoal, behaviourial.);
~500-750 words for conclusion – summary and looking to the future (e.g. lessons learned; prospects – esp for clinical medicine)
N.B. these figures are not hard and fast – just suggestions to generate a comprehensive report covering the subject in both overview and detail. Only the overall word count will be noted.
