As an initial (or review) of analyzing character and citing sources and using in-text
citations, this 500-word AT LEAST (song lyrics and works cited not included) essay
means to be your foray into the world of writing about literature.
Why? This is a loopy prompt, but this first paper is designed to practice research
skills, structuring an essay, as well as an introduction to writing literary analysis.
There will be samples available to get the idea as well as prep assignments to
draft to final draft, also a practice of the writing process from idea to product.
Assignment:
Choose a character (literature, television, film) to analyze by creating the perfect
mixed-tape for that character. It can be popular music from any time period
and/or genre.
The lyrics should prove as evidence to your specific insights into the character and
should adhere to MLA requirements for citing sourced material (al la lyrics). Your
reasons for connecting the songs/lyrics to the character should be explained and
evident to the reader.
Introductions and conclusions should be free of the lyrics and should rather be
introduction to the qualities of the character and conclusions or insights about
the character.
Paper should, of course, adhere to transitions between topics and ideas, should
include engaging hook to start the conversation, and should use proper grammar
and usage. Draft notes will be provided; however, at this point, you should be
more focused on content help than proofreading and formatting issues.
Have fun with and choose a character you know well!
