Objective: In this assignment, you delve into the theories of deviance and apply them to real-life topics. In the first few weeks, we have explored various theories including individualist, sociological, and social-psychological theories of deviance. By analysing social issues through different theoretical lenses, you will gain a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding deviance and associated societal processes.
Step one: Choose one deviant behaviour that has emerged due to technological advancements. Examples include cyberbullying, identity theft, digital piracy, online radicalisation, phishing and similar behaviours.
Step two: Select two theories of deviance from the course materials or the wider literature.
Step three: compose an essay comparing the two theories in their explanations of the causes, processes, effects, and implications of the selected deviant behaviour. Discuss insights offered by each theory, analyse their strengths and limitations, and determine which theory you find more compelling. The essay needs to offer adequate context to the selected deviance, explore its significance, and discuss the role of technology.
Referencing: you are required to cite at least six academic sources (academic references refer to peer-reviewed sources such as books, book chapters and journal articles). In addition to the six academic sources, you could cite non-academic, but reputable, sources such as government websites.

- Formatting guidelines:
- Font: use either Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman.
- Font size: set the font size to 12.
- Line spacing: either 1.5 or double-line spacing.
- Margins: between 2 cm and 2.54 cm (1 inch) on all sides.
- Alignment: align the text to the left.
- Number the pages.
- Provide a separate page for list of references.
- The essay title should be at the top of your submission.
