Establishing the Need for a School-Family-Community Partnership and Closing the Learning Gap
Submit the assignment by 11:59 PM PT Sunday of Module 3.
In this module’s application assignment, you will design a new (or strengthen an existing) partnership that joins school, family, and community to support student achievement. You then will compose a 2-page business letter to the proposed community partner (not including the references).
Complete the following steps to determine the content for the business letter:
Step 1. Identify
Identify a current student issue/need that interferes with academic achievement at your school. Your school improvement plan likely highlights these areas. Cite data that support the need. These could be data related to academic achievement, student attendance, discipline, or other needs. Locate and describe trends in the data and disaggregated data, where available.
Step 2. Describe
Based on the identified need, describe a community or family partnership that might address the need. What are its goals? Include who will lead the program and potential stakeholders. How does the partnership address both identified student needs and gaps evidenced by your SWOT analysis in Module 1?
Step 3. Vision
Articulate your vision for the partnership. How do you envision the new or improved partnership resolving the issue or need identified in the data and improving student achievement?
Step 4. Compose
Compose at least three SMART goals directly tied to student achievement for the partnership to work toward.
Step 5. Outline
Outline the steps to approval and implementation of the partnership. For example, does your idea require the principal’s approval or school board approval, etc.? What must you do to initiate the partnership?
Step 6. Identify and Describe
Identify resources required for the partnership, including sources of funding. Describe how you will communicate and market information about the proposed partnership to all stakeholders. How will you sell the idea?
Step 7. Summarize
Summarize at least two evidence-based strategies/activities you are recommending the partnership undertake to support the SMART goals you’ve developed (i.e., multi-tiered systems of support [MTSS], positive behavioral support systems [PBSS], mentorship, social-emotional learning [SEL]). Reference the research which supports the strategies/activities you are recommending. WWC: What Works Clearinghouse, linked on the Learning Objects page, is an excellent source for evidence-based strategies.
Step 8. Conclude
What research supports investing time, money, and personnel in this partnership and the work that is required to make it a reality to support student achievement at your school?
Step 9. Compile
Compile the 2-page business letter using the information from Steps 1-8. Separate the letter with subheadings for each of the steps. Include APA-formatted references.
Step 10. Submit
Submit your 2-page business letter. This is not a traditional paper, and you may format the letter, so it is visually appealing to the proposed community partner reading it. You do not need a title page or in-text citations but include APA-formatted references after the letter.
