Ethical, Moral, and Spiritual Development (Self-Reflection) – Personal Spiritual Development & Journey

Assignment # 1

Ethical, Moral, and Spiritual Development (Self- Reflection) Brief Paper:

Write a four to six-page, double spaced (12 font) APA-formatted paper on your definitions of morality, ethicality, and spirituality as related to your work as a counselor. Although this is a reflection paper, you are reminded to be tactful and technical in their writing. A minimum of three peer-review sources ought to be used to support this brief paper.

In this paper, you will discuss your understanding of the differences and similarities of the three concepts; ethicality, morality, and spirituality. Your awareness of your own ethical, moral, and spiritual development up to this point in life should also be discussed.

To better focus this paper, select a specific ethical dilemma that you currently are facing in relation to a population, clinical presentation, or value/core belief. Select a dilemma that currently is considered significant enough to require some degree of emotional, mental, or similar maturation to develop competence. Be mindful to select an actual dilemma and not an area of simple incompetence where a lack of knowledge, skill, and/or awareness can be addressed with practical exposure and training. This distinction can be challenging, and you are encouraged to reach out to the instructor for guidance should you have concerns. Use this dilemma to:

(1) operationalize your definitions of ethicality, morality, and spirituality, as well as,

(2) explain your own belief in ethical, moral and spiritual correctness in relation to the selected dilemma and how this currently may present a challenge for a client associated with the dilemma.

Consider the component of the Division’s Core Values 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 listed below to:

  1. Discriminate your understanding and profession of morality, ethicality, and spirituality through objective, operational definitions for your reflection. (see DOEC Core Values)

  2. Address how your moral and ethical development informs your spiritual identity and practice; and

  3. Address how your sense of spirituality supports your ethical decision making and moral standards.

  • This is not an opportunity to impress the reader, but to develop greater authenticity, awareness, and accountability of your “becoming”.

DOEC Core Values of Spirituality: An innate dimension of the human person from which an individual derives an ability to form relationships (with God, the human community and all of creation), values and a perceived meaning of human life and experience.

1.0 Spirituality – relationship with God, community and all creation.

    1. Support the continuing development of self and others. (PD-Professional Disposition)

    2. Engage in advocacy in the form of service learning, community service, program development, and volunteerism. (PD-Professional Disposition)
