Links to an external site., evaluate the two children’s stories — an African tale and a fairytale — by completing the following critique of each book:
1) What is the difference between an African tale and a fairytale?
2) Applying the definitions of African tale and fairytale, list three qualities for each of the stories that make it an African tale or fairytale. In other words, why are Mufario’s Beautiful Daughters: An African Tale considered an African Tale and why is Cinderella considered a fairytale?
3) Using the web, identify the full bibliographic information (title, author, publisher, date of publication, illustrator if there is one), target audience age, and picture of the book covers.
4) Write a paragraph summary of each book.
5) Identify the theme(s) of each book.
6) What do the two stories have in common?
7) What, in your opinion, is stereotypical or racist about the two children’s stories?
