- Please be sure that you have gone to the FILES section of Canvas and downloaded the APA Template. It is mandatory. Every class at DVU uses this template except in rare cases (such as for professional writing or math classes). Most schools require APA, MLA, Chicago, Turabian, and a bunch of other citation formats. DVU uses only APA.
- Please remember that you are writing a rhetorical analysis essay. The purpose of this essay is to teach you the ancient strategies that all great writers and speakers use — and that we use every single day — even if we don’t know it. Please note that we quite literally do NOT care what the topic of the talk is. The authors can talk about anything. We are NOT summarizing the talk or agreeing or disagreeing with the author. ALL we care about is what types of strategies the author is using.
- Please be sure to review the mandatory outline. It is posted on the discussions, in the class notes, in the live lecture recording, and in the supplemental live lecture. It is your responsibility to follow it step by step. Our goal is to learn the strategies, so that we can use them in every other class and in the real world but to do them CONSCIOUSLY now.
- The only acceptable thesis statement is as follows: It will be something like: Transition + comma, + your opinion + reasons (e.g., Ultimately, X is persuasive due to the expert use of rhetorical and visual strategies.).
- The BODY of the paper must discuss the ethos, logos, pathos, and presentation strategies the author uses — with examples based on time stamps.
- Your task is to use the PIE Technique and SIP Format for the body paragraphs. If you didn’t learn those things in English 112, don’t panic. I have covered them in the live lectures and class notes. You can also see them in the supplemental live lectures. If you aren’t giving us those examples based on strategies, explaining why they matter, and citing your source, then you aren’t doing the essay correctly.
- Please remember to PARAPHRASE as much as possible. The goal is to ensure that you don’t simply dump a bunch of direct quotations into the essay. If we wanted to watch the talk, we would. Instead, the goal is to help us to see how the author has put things together but to use the quotations as if they were salt. We care more about your explanations than the quotations. Paraphrases are crucial! Yes, you still have to give the timestamps!
- The CONCLUSION must be a call to action to your readers ABOUT the STRATEGIES.
