- The essay must make an assertion that can be summarized in a clear, concise thesis statement.
Do not merely present a collection of facts; rather, you must use your information to make a persuasive argument about your subject. This is an argumentative essay.
- The essay must be typed in a font no larger than #12 and double-spaced on the page with about 1” margins all around. Pages must be numbered.
- Parenthetical citations must be used, conforming to MLA guidelines.
- A Works Cited page must be included, conforming to MLA guidelines. The Works Cited page does not count as part of the essay itself, so you must write a ten-page essay plus a Works Cited page.
- You must cite at least five high-quality sources in addition to any generalized sources (such as encyclopedias) that you may use. “High-quality” sources are specialized and scholarly or journalistic. Similarly, you may use information from any website, but be discerning with regard to their “seriousness” (and this, of course, is true of any source…). If you have questions or doubts about the validity of a source, feel free to ask your instructor about it.
- Save all of your preparatory work, including notes, preliminary writings, outlines, rough drafts, etc. You might be asked to turn them in.
- Your Works Cited page should list only that work that you have cited–do NOT include annotations. Annotations were part of the outline assignment only.
