feedback on the slides:
The exhibition dedicated to Juan de Pareja as the subject of Velázquez’s famous portrait and as an artist in his own right is a complicated one. There are at least three aspects to it: Velázquez as an artist, Juan de Pareja as an artist, and Arturo Schomburg’s role in the 1920s in recovering the history of the formerly enslaved artist. Your presentation gave your classmates a good introduction to what to expect should they go to The Met to see it. Your slides were clear, but it is very important to attribute the sources of your information. For example, the text beside your image of the portrait was taken directly from the museum’s materials. You need to use your own words. There were two points that you seemed to have misunderstood: when I asked how the exhibition related to the museum’s permanent collection, it was an opportunity to demonstrate how the museum has been re-examining works from their permanent collection that have relevance for the interest in discussions about underrepresented people. It was also an opportunity to explain how the museum acquired the portrait in 1971. The second area that you did not quite understand was in relation to the “supporting material.” This question was meant as an opportunity for you to explain whether a catalogue was published and whether the museum has organized educational programming in connection to the exhibition. If there are aspects of an assignment that are unclear, always feel comfortable asking for clarification. The exhibition dedicated to Juan de Pareja as the subject of Velázquez’s famous portrait and as an artist in his own right is a complicated one.
