My Topic Proposal: Exploring the Central Theme of Death and its Effects on Female Sense of Self
The two texts that I am using are n “The Story of an Hour,” by Kate Chopinn and William Faulkner’s piece, “A Rose for Emily”
Sources must be peer reviewed
lReturn to MLA, JSTOR, and ProjectMUSE (available through our library) and locate relevant peer-reviewed journal articles. Be sure to read abstracts if/when they’re available to determine whether its worth your time to read the entire article. If there’s no abstract provided, read the first section of the article, stopping at the point where the author(s) offers a thesis statement. At that point, you should have enough information to determine whether to continue to the end or to move on to another item in your search results.
Assignment
For any 3 of the relevant articles you find, please write a short annotation that includes:
the source’s bibliographic information formatted according to MLA guidelines;
a 2-3 sentence summary of the source;
1-2 sentences in which you describe what makes the source interesting to you given your questions/ideas about the text.
Note that you should not have an argument/thesis at this stage. Be open to the ideas/interpretations presented.
Please note: It is highly unlikely that you will find a scholarly article that talks about BOTH of your chosen texts AND chosen thematic topic. And that’s okay. In fact, it’s actually better if such an article doesn’t exist. After all, your goal is to contribute to a conversation, not repeat what’s already been said.
