Structure:
In your first paragraph, please summarize the the book as an introduction.
In the following paragraphs, please address these prompts/ideas:
– What were the historical reasons that African Americans were originally optimistic about military service in Vietnam?
– How did African Americans become over-represented on the war front and in the casualty counts, and why did those numbers wane over time?
– What were the (sometimes) subtle and (sometimes) overt types of racism faced by African Americans in the military during the Vietnam War?
In your last paragraph, summarize your responses as a conclusion.
Please use examples from the book to back up your analysis.
– Provide citations to back up your examples using parenthetical citations, for example (Author, Title, Page #), so it should look like this: (Westheider, Fighting on Two Fronts, 27).
– Do not use excessive direct quotations.
– Quotations may not exceed three lines. Instead, where possible, use your own words and provide a citation.
– Please capitalize the word “Black” when you use it and please use it as an adjective, not a noun. For example, Black soldiers, Black men and women, Black communities. You are also welcome to use African American.
