Your primary source selection should be from the appropriate time period
and should provide a strong basis for discussion. You might choose to look at a
building, a written source such as a charter and/or a chronicle account, or a
small physical source.
This question asks you to take a long view of Scotland’s relationship
with England, across two centuries. You need to identify how the relationship
changed and explain why these changes occurred. You should think about
Anglo-Scottish relations in a variety of contexts including governance, the
Church/religion, economy, nobility and military. You should also refer to key
personalities (kings, bishops, nobles etc). Your answer should cover the nature
of Anglo-Norman influence at the start of the period, the rule of a single
dynasty for most of the period, and should consider why the period ended with
such pronounced Anglo-Scottish tensions.
Your final paragraph should include reflection on the usefulness and
limitations of the sources you have chosen, and suggestions of other sources
which could be useful in further study.
