STEP 2: Analyze the Formal Elements and Context

Using your chosen painting, answer the following with complete sentences:

  1. Identify and describe at least two formal elements in this painting. Use the vocabulary and be specific!
  2. What was happening in society when this painting was made?
  3. What is the message of this painting?
              • To find the message of a work of art, you need to analyze the information gathered for the first two questions. Think about the lectures and videos in this module, and think about these questions: How does Rothko’s work fit in to the overall tone of this period? What does he want the viewer to experience when looking at his work? Why is it relevant?
