Please refer to and make sure you follow the essay guidelines on Gauchospace for writing and
formatting advice (note that these are broad guidelines for long and short essays – so adjust
accordingly). For essays of this length you should be aiming for: Introduction/thesis followed by
2-3 body paragraphs and a Conclusion. Please note that if your paper does not quote from the
novel it will not receive a passing grade.
For this paper you should make use of keywords and terminology from our lecture discussion
(without repeating lecture content!) alongside critical analysis and close reading to respond to a
specific prompt (chosen from those below). You are welcome, although not required, to refer to
secondary criticism, in the form of a book, article or review (not Wikipedia or similar). The most
logical way to begin this process is to find a passage or scene from the text(s) that speaks to your
selected subject, and use this as a way to introduce your thesis. Remember that a thesis is a
statement that is debatable, meaning that you will argue your case through the paper. If you are
having trouble coming up with a thesis topic and formulating your paper, or finding suitable
secondary material please don’t hesitate to me – in advance. WARNING: Do not repeat material
from lecture – you may use lecture materials as a reference, but make sure you give it your own
interpretation. Repeating lecture material will result in a reduced grade – particularly if you use the
same primary quotes – you must find your own evidence from the text to support your argument.
Please make sure you refer to the “Research Paper Writing and Formatting Instructions” before

3) Analyze (don’t describe!) the role of ONE of the following characters in the novel:
Walton; Elizabeth; Clerval; Safie.
4) Discuss the importance of the form of the novel.
