Approximately 10–15% of babies born in the United States require admission to and care in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Typically, this is a result of babies being born preterm or with serious illnesses not necessarily related to prematurity. These can include low birth weight, respiratory distress syndrome, etc.
One aspect of the NICU stay that is often overlooked is the challenge that many families face related to cost of travel to visit their babies, the cost of food for families while visiting, and if they live a significant distance from the NICU, they may need to stay in nearby hotels when visiting baby.
