Each week/module, we will respond to the prompt in 250-words or more. We will use this activity for peer review and discussion with a few of our class mates. This process has two steps (1. Post 2. Respond). 1. You post your work before 11:30 pm Thursday evening. Your groupmates will do the same. Then you write a thoughtful, 100-word or more response to each of your group mates’ posts. This response is due before 11:30 pm Sunday evening. You are welcome to strike up a conversation. We are here to help each other improve our writing. Suggestions and information are key. In that vein, compliments and vague statements will not count toward the 100-word response limit, as compliments alone will not help a group mate improve a piece of writing. Each Discussion assignment is worth 10 points total. Partial points may be awarded to partial efforts. Students must respond to their group mates to receive any points. And because this is a conversation that happens in time and place the due dates will be monitored and enforced.
Prompt:
- Find a real piece of “fake news.
- Give your group mates a summary of the story. You may also post a picture if you want. You may make a video for this assignment as well.
- Then list these items: 1) what about it is fake; 2) what about it is real; 3) where/how it was published; 4) who made it; 5) what were the motives of the creators; 6) how (and how far) did it spread; and 7) what are the present and future consequences of this piece of fake news?
Responders: Do you agree with the posters’ description of motive? Can you help the poster elaborate on the possible present or future consequences of this piece of fake news? Have you ever seen anything like it? Do you think you might have been fooled by this disinformation if you encountered it in the right context? How might you go about vetting such news?
