For the last of the Chapter Questions I asked you to consider the idea that “ending slavery was supposed to be the solution, but how can you see the foundation for many of the country’s modern racial problems being laid almost as soon as slavery was abolished?” However, I intentionally left the notion of the “solution” vague — what was abolition supposed to solve, do you think, and what sort of country did abolitionists envision coming into existence on the far side of the elimination of slavery?
