RESEARCH PAPER AND PROJECT
Paper Section (85%)
You will research and write a research paper of no less than ten pages and no greater than twelve. No one should have trouble meeting the page count. The page count will not include your works cited/references page. The paper may build upon/significantly revise a paper you began last semester (but it doesn’t have to). Use your new knowledge from this class to expand your previous paper to expand ideas and create a new paper. You can connect your paper to any class concept or material we’ve discussed.
Format: I will review APA in class, and I hope most of you will use APA, but if you feel more comfortable using MLA, you may. Your paper should be in TNR, 12 pt. font, 1-inch margins. No extra spaces between paragraphs. You should include a “works cited” (MLA) or “references” (APA) page. You should follow all applicable conventions of the style you choose unless explicitly asked to change them by your instructor.
Sources: You should be relying significantly on tools available through the library. For your project, I will expect you to use two books (these can be manuscripts which you access electronically), two scholarly journal articles, and two (reputable, reliable) internet sources. You can use additional sources of other types, but you must fulfill these requirements, too. You can use pieces from class, but your research should be mostly material you’ve found on your own.
Due dates: Your research will be submitted via Moodle in several major segments, all of which will be components of your grade. The actual due dates for all of these segments are on your syllabus. Below is a detailed list of the expectations for what you should turn in to me on those dates.
Research question: formulate a question about the way in which your draft from last semester relates to some major concept from this semester. Your new research will be aimed at answering that question. Your paper’s thesis statement will be the answer to the question.
Outline: should include your research question and a draft of a possible answer (this answer statement will become your thesis). It should also articulate the main idea/purpose of each paragraph of your paper (which would be roughly 15-20 paragraphs). Finally, at the end it should include to complete and accurate source citations.
