Create an MS Word Document for the submission. Write out your approved EDP question. Then identify at least three articles in the peer-reviewed literature that are related to it. For this assignment, you may use review articles. The purpose of these articles is to inform you about what is known about your population, disease, and exposure of interest.
Write a summary (3-4 paragraphs) about what you have learned from these three articles, being sure to cite in the text specific information you learned from the articles. You should *not* simply summarize each article.
Provide a list of citations in APA format. Do not copy and paste (or simply reword) from the article
Research Question
- Is your question in EDP format?
- Is there one specific and measurable exposure and outcome? These should not be general concepts like “mental health” or “eating patterns” or “predictors.”
- Is your population distinct from the exposure? (For example, if your exposure is “low vs high income”, your population should not be “Detroit and Grosse Pointe Park.)
- Can you draw a 2×2 table for your question and confirm that all four squares will have enough participants in them? (For example, how likely is it that you would find college students that do not use social media?)
Review
- Does your article avoid unnecessary quotations? Do not list the name of the journal, article title, the institution, etc.
- Have you cited in the text? Facts asserted must be linked to specific works cited. If a source is listed in the works cited, it needs to be linked to the text.
- Have you checked to avoid inadvertent plagiarism (e.g., cut and pasted notes vs summarizing in your own words?)
- Have you synthesized what you have learned or summarized each article in a paragraph? Try organizing along the lines of exposure, disease, population; or past studies, controversies, further questions.
- Have you considered the strength and quality of the evidence? For example, what type of studies have you looked at? How well do the exposures and outcomes used reflect the concepts the authors want to measure?
- Have you included enough detail? If each paragraph is two sentences long, you probably have not.
- Have you broken your submission into paragraphs? One huge block of text is difficult to read and suggests you have not organized your thinking.
- Have you checked for grammar and spelling? Use Grammarly or ask someone else to read your work. Common problem areas include subject-verb agreement, sentence fragments, and “Dr. Kessel.”
Citations
- Are these alphabetical, by author, and in APA format?
- If you list a website and no author, it is likely that your article is not peer-reviewed, or you are citing it incorrectly. PubMed has a citation tool that allows you to select APA format, and so does Google Scholar.
For the assignment due Sunday, review your submission for the issues above. Rewrite and revise your submission and identify at least three additional articles that are relevant to your question. The revised submission should be at least 750 words, not counting the works cited.
