For this assignment, students will write an essay (including a unique title, introductory paragraph with a thesis statement, 3-4 body paragraphs that include quotations from the text(s), concluding paragraph, and Works Cited page in MLA style). Your essay should include evidence from the primary text (ie. the course reading or viewing) and one additional secondary source (ie. a journal article, web page, dictionary, encyclopedia, etc.). Use MLA style for citations (ie. Last Name and page) for prose or (Last Name and line number) for poetry. If no author is listed, cite the first word of the title: (“History”).
Topic: Discuss how Jackson Katz’s concept of the “tough guise” of masculinity (or more generally, gender stereotypes of masculinity and femininity) are conveyed in “Who’s For the Game?” by Jessie Pope and/or in Horace’s “Ode 3.2.” In your essay identify the characteristics of the tough guise and how the poem(s) convey this gender stereotype.
