Discuss how media coverage of women and crime (re)produces attitudes and beliefs about women, whether you see trends in such coverage as a problem, and why (or why not). In your analysis, include discussion of the sorts of women who conform to media-mediated notions of ‘ideal’ victims, as well as the characteristics of female victims who tend to be invisible or portrayed as blameworthy for their own victimization. You should also discuss the standard narratives used to construct women who commit serious crimes, and how such narratives reinforce stereotypes about women in U.S. culture more generally.
