The primary cause of the Crusades is often a matter of debate. Some argue that religion was the main reason for calling the Crusades and for people joining the Crusades. Others argue that the motivations for calling and participation in the Crusades were secular (non-religious). After completing the learning activities in Session 15, create an outline that would allow you to argue both sides of the issue and provide a one-paragraph summary of your position on the question.
Identify the secular and religious reasons for the Crusades and differentiate between the primary Crusades/ What was the primary cause of the Crusades?
One debating skill is the ability to craft a response to the anticipated arguments from the opposing side. To prepare for the Crusades Debate, research both sides of the argument. The question for this debate is “Were the Crusaders primarily motivated by religion?” You need to create an outline that identifies at least three factors that support the Crusades as primarily religious and at least three factors that support the Crusades as primarily secular. You will need to provide some detail. You cannot simply say “Jerusalem” or “land.” Your outline should look something like this:
Religious Motivations (may use phrase rather than sentence)
First religious motivation (may use phrase rather than sentence)
One sentence explanation of the motivation
After you have developed outlines for both sides of the debate, write one paragraph that explains what you think the answer to the question is. Be sure to support your position. This paragraph should include why you think one side of the debate is more persuasive and why the other side of the debate did not convince you.
Note that you may use phrases on some parts of the outline if you want to, but when you get to the explanation of the motivation, you need to use complete sentences. The paragraph in which you express your opinion on the issue needs to be written using proper grammar and formal tone. Be sure to document your use of sources. Any phrase or sentence that you use from another source needs to have a citation.
