The three components of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that went into effect in 2014 are:
1) Expands access to care by increasing access to insurance (Austin & Wetle, 2016). An increase in access to insurance helped individuals and small businesses receive affordable care based on income. This increases the demand for health care and increases in need for nursing.
2) The act mandates ways to control healthcare costs (Austin & Wetle, 2016). Medicaid was expanded to cover individuals 138% below the poverty level resulting in a potentially increased need for healthcare professionals.
3) The law includes numerous specifically targeted mandates to improve the healthcare delivery system’s performance and quality (Austin & Wetle, 2016).

The three components of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that went into effect in 2014 include but not limited to; New consumer protection which prevent patients from discrimination against gender religion and or their pre=existing medical conditions, eliminates annual limits for insurance coverage and ensures that all patients participating in a clinical trial to be covered. It improved the quality of care and lowered cost; by making it more affordable through tax credit to the middle-class citizens. It also established that, if an employer does not offer healthcare benefits, a person can buy it from directly in the health insurance marketplace. This provision also increased tax credit to small business owners. According to French (2016), “The provision also increased access to affordable care who earn less than 133 percent of the poverty level (approximately $14,000 for an individual and $29,000 for a family of four) will be eligible to enroll in Medicaid. States will receive 100 percent federal funding for the first 3 years to support this expanded coverage, phasing to 90 percent federal funding in subsequent years and promoted individuals’ responsibility by requiring those individuals who can afford to obtain a basic health insurance coverage or pay a fee to help offset the costs of caring for uninsured Americans. Since the Affordable Care Act began, the health care system experienced a rise in the number of new patients which has placed a strain on nurses and hospitals. Emergency room visits have increased and in turn, loads patient load have increased for nurses and doctors. On the other hand, nurses have an advantage as baby boomers age, there’s an increasing need for health care, particularly for geriatric population. The Affordable Care Act has been helping to cover training costs for new nurses as well as those looking to advance their training in the field. (Cleveland, Motter, & Smith, 2019).
