Discussion Post:
In my opinion, computer and information literacy should be a requirement for nursing programs because it is essential for nursing informatics and proper documentation. The field of nursing requires a lot of documentation and essentially all of it is completed on some form of electronic healthcare system. This documentation is extremely important for many reasons. One example of why it is important is that it provides legal protection for nurses as it is a written record of the care that they provided for patients and details what occurred during their shift. This is just one of the many reasons why these electronic health records are necessary, and without the proper skills in computer and information literacy, a nurse may be more likely to make errors in documentation. These errors could be both damaging for the nurse, the patient, and possibly other healthcare professionals who also must access the same electronic chart. Our textbook states that, “Many undergraduate and graduate nursing education programs recognize that it is essential to prepare nurses to practice in a technology-rich environment.” (National League for Nursing [NLN], 2015 as cited by Yoder-Wise & Sportsman, 2023). I believe that it would be extremely beneficial for nurses to receive education regarding computer and information literacy, as it is a growing part of the field of nursing and healthcare as a whole.
