Topic: The Pros and Cons of Standardized Testing” by Sarah Cohn, published on October 16th, 2019, by Galileo K-12
In this assignment, students will demonstrate the ability to compose a well-organized and
effectively developed essay in MLA format using a combination of three different rhetorical
strategies: argumentation, persuasion, and exemplification. You will use argumentation by
putting forth strong argumentative claims for the thesis and topic sentences. You will use
exemplification by providing evidence, in the form of quotes from scholarly and credible sources,
and you will use persuasion by convincing your reader that the evidence you have provided
proves the thesis and topic sentence claims. While this combination of strategies represents
somewhat of a deviation from the textbook, a sample essay has been provided in the Writing
Assignments folder to demonstrate the proper form. This essay should include a clear thesis
statement, topic sentences to support the thesis statement, major details to expand on the topic
sentences, and additional evidence to reinforce the major details.
