Chapter 6 in Lee (2023) explores population health. An important focal point when examining population health involves how disparities impact health outcomes. Health disparities are closely linked with economic, social, and environmental disadvantages, which create barriers to adequate health care. As leaders in the community, we have the strength to enact change in the healthcare system to reduce disparities. To do this, we must first understand the social determinants of health contributing to disparities and inequalities in economic stability, education quality, and access to care.
This week I want you to consider your influence as leaders in the healthcare system. Please read the following article by the American Organization for Nursing Leadership, which describes core competencies for nurse leaders. Notice how economics, policy, financial management, health equity, and social determinants of health are all described as key competencies. Using the information you have learned throughout this course and the objectives described in this article, reflect upon the type of leader you wish to become.
