Interpreting or theorizing literature: create an original argument about Shakespeare’s Hamlet. This can be a unique interpretation

Option 3). Interpreting or theorizing literature: create an original argument about Shakespeare’s Hamlet. This can be a unique interpretation (such as your unique take on a character or an action you felt should have been taken), an observation, or larger truth you feel this play is telling. In your essay, point to specific evidence in the text. This can include analyzing specific literary/rhetorical devices that support your argument. (When we interpret literature, we can have an author-centered interpretation, a text-centered interpretation, a reader-centered interpretation, or a combination.) If you are leaning toward this option and need a starting point, consider one of these questions to respond to:

  • Did Hamlet love Ophelia?
  • Why does Hamlet not rush to revenge as soon as the ghost asks him to avenge him?
  • What is the role of death (both death itself and the idea of it) in Hamlet?
  • What role does “acting” (performance) play in Hamlet?

Whichever of the three above options you choose, remember to:

  • Include a cover letter with this essay. The cover letter should be at least 1-2 paragraphs, but it can be as long as you like. In your cover letter, make sure you identify who your audience is and precisely what the point of your essay was. This is a good space to include a reflection on your writing process, discuss anything that was especially fascinating to you as you worked on this project, and to brag about anything you were especially proud of as you worked on this analysis.
  • Determine a focus or thesis for your paper (of typically 1-2 sentences) to summarize the point of your essay, or the message you are trying to convey.
  • This essay needs to be at least 5-6 pages. This means it needs to be at least five (5) full pages of text, not counting the cover letter or works cited page.
  • All writers need to visit the SSTC (virtually or in-person) at least twice as you work on this essay. First, you will need to chat with a tutor to get feedback on your thesis. Your second visit can be about any other aspect of the essay. (Feel free to visit the SSTC more than twice for this assignment!)
  • This essay needs to include at least three scholarly sources from the MC Library in addition to the text of the play.
  • The essay must use direct quotations and summary details from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. These direct quotes and indirect quotes will act as the primary evidence in support of your argument.
  • This essay must be in MLA format and include proper MLA in-text citations and a properly formatted works cited page.
  • This essay should utilize the elements we have so far discussed, which include but are not limited to the following: an engaging introduction, a clear argument (thesis) sustained by credible evidence, evidence of critical thinking, analysis of rhetorical/literary devices used in the play, a clearly identified text/source, an appropriate tone, complete sentences, clear organization and paragraphs with clear main points (topic sentences), transitions between each paragraph, specific details, summary and analysis, correct grammar and spelling, meaningful reflection, and a strong conclusion.
