Child labor in the gold mining sector of Zimbabwe is a significant issue that presents serious risks to the physical health of child workers. Various studies have concluded that these risks should not be overlooked, as child workers are exposed to toxic metals such as mercury, which has detrimental long term health consequences. These consequences include neurological and developmental disorders, respiratory and gastrointestinal problems, and kidney damage. Furthermore, child labor in gold mining limits the child access to education and healthcare. It can also expose the child to physical and mental abuse. In order to confront these issues, policymakers and stakeholders must introduce effective resource policies that aim to promote sustainable and ethical mining practices. Most importantly, these resource policies should aim to protect the welfare of children and communities in gold mining areas. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the long-term and short-term health and social effects of gold mining on child workers in Zimbabwe. In doing so, policymakers should be able to comprehend what workers must face from their damaging working conditions. Using this, policymakers can develop strategies that would diminish the dangerous effects of gold mining on child workers along with supporting their rights and well-being.
