Much of our personal, academic, and professional writing is critical and analytical. As
Walter Pater believes, when we see an object as it really is, know our impressions,
discriminate, and realize distinguishing features, we engage in the act of critical analysis.
“To analyze” means to break down into parts. “To criticize” means to evaluate, review,
or determine the worth or value of something. The analysis, therefore, breaks down a
subject (essay) into parts (or features) and explains HOW the evidence demonstrates the
veracity of the argument(s) (point of analysis).
Assignment:
Jonathan Swift’s essay “A Modest Proposal” highlights the economic discrepancy and
political unrest in Ireland in the 1720s. In the essay, the speaker proposes a solution to
the economic discrepancy prevalent in Ireland. This piece of literature is unique as it
presents an amalgamation of an essay and a fictional piece of writing.
For the purpose of this assignment, students will critically analyze the subject of the
essay by evaluating the ethos of the speaker, and the structure (organization) and the
implications of the language in Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal.”
As students evaluate the structure of the essay, they will consider how the speaker
presents his ideas to the reader. Additionally, students will evaluate the implications of
the language proposed in the essay and determine Swift’s implicit argument and address
the moral conclusion that the audience may derive.
Your essay will present a tiered evaluation. Your task, then, will be to
A) provide a detailed analysis of the work in relation to the speaker’s ethos and
demonstration of logos (organization).
B) evaluate the implications of language as signifying a dehumanized and distorted
portrayal of the poor
C) argue the manner in which Jonathan Swift’s essay depicts the moral conclusion
the audience may derive.
The first essay consists of seven (7) paragraphs: an introduction, five (5) body
paragraphs, and a conclusion.
Introduction:
The introduction (at least for the first essay) should consist of 5-7sentences. Remember,
the introduction clarifies the focus of your discussion; hence, the introduction needs to

provide your audience with all the essential information regarding the context of your
argument.
The first sentence of the introduction should indicate the name of the author and the piece
of literature you are evaluating. The subsequent sentences introduce the context of the
piece of literature (essay), though only as it pertains to the focus of your discussion. Since
the purpose of the essay is to evaluate the structure and the implications of language, you,
as the writer, will introduce this information in the introductory paragraph.
Students will refrain from providing any biographical information concerning Jonathan
Swift or summarizing the essay “A Modest Proposal.”
The last sentence of the introduction consists of the thesis statement (central claim). The
thesis statement is the controlling idea of the essay; hence, the thesis statement is an
explicit sentence that effectively conveys the argument you have posed and substantiated
in the body paragraphs. The thesis statement (central claim) will consist of merely one
(1) sentence.
Remember, the introduction clarifies the focus of your discussion to your audience.
Each body paragraph should begin with a precise topic sentence that clearly indicates the
argument you have posed and substantiated in the body paragraph. The topic sentence
will consist of merely one (1) sentence. Make sure every idea or sentence in a paragraph
relates to its topic sentence; the purpose of the body paragraph is to prove the veracity of
the argument you posed in the topic sentence.
The Conclusion:
The seventh paragraph consists of the conclusion. The conclusion should consist of 5-7
sentences. In addition, the first sentence of the conclusion will restate the thesis
statement. The conclusion provides you one more opportunity to convince your audience
as to the veracity of the central claim. The conclusion should not list the body
paragraphs; rather its purpose is to demonstrate that in consideration of the evidence, the
argument posed in the thesis is justified.
Remember, the conclusion reiterates that in consideration of the evidence, the argument
posed in the thesis is justified.
