The theme for week 3 is “What?”. We will explore the industry of Leadership Development and the business it constitutes. Primary reading sources for week 3 will be pages 27 through 64 in the Future of Leadership Development text (attached again for your convenience to the this week’s home page), and please do not forget to reference 3 current and relevant articles from literature to reinforce your ideas.
You will be required to investigate these ideas and use current literature (citing original sources 2019-2023) to identify their place in the body of knowledge now. It is a glimpse into the history of Leadership Development and how we ended up where we are today.
In this week’s Moodle shell, you will find a textbook called The Future of Leadership Development. Chapters 1 and two on pages 27 through 64 are of particular relevance to this week’s content. You will use this book again moving throughout the course.
The questions for reflection can be found in the PDF file entitled “Learning Activity”. Just like last week, I ask you to reflect on these questions and provide answers from literature and from your own personal reflections
**THE LEARNING ACTIVITY QUESTIONS THAT WILL BE USED FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT WILL BE ATTACHED TO THE UPLOADS** The questions are:
1. Leadership Development is a lucrative financial enterprise. Why is that true? In your
workforce and educational experience, how has leadership development been applied and
addressed?
2. The authors present the idea of Leadership Development as an “onion model.” Below are the
five layers of leadership development in this model. How is each defined? How might they be
used? What is the value of each? What are the challenges?
a. Me as a Leader (Self)
b. Leader of a Team
c. Leader of an Organization
d. Leader in a Profession
e. Leader in a Global World
3. Explore the idea of Leadership Development “Gurus”. What are the benefits of a guru
approach? What are the disadvantages or obstacles to a guru approach? Have you had any of
these experiences in your own development? What ideas need to be considered from the
“buyer side” and from the “supplier side” of leadership development (productization)?
4. What are the important metrics that need to be considered in measuring the effectiveness of
a leadership development program? Explain the challenges and difficulties associated with
these measures.
5. Chapter Four offers an investigation into three key ideas in the evolving field of leadership
development. These are highly interconnected. For each key idea, please provide an
explanation of the idea and its application. Also discuss the challenges and opportunities for
each in the future.
a. Responsible Leadership
b. Vertical Leadership Development (in contrast to Horizontal Leadership Development)
c. Collective Leadership
6. Throughout chapters 3 and 4 the authors make several references to the multi-generational
workforce and the differing perspectives brought to the work of Leadership Development by
different generational groups- Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Baby Boomers. Chapter 4 also offers
a glimpse into the broader idea of role models. Why are role models valuable? Why might the
theory of a role model be different today than it was in generations past? What is your
experience in navigating a multi-generational workforce and potential role models within?
